Our daughter Renee took weekly classical piano lessons with Grace for twelve years starting at the age of seven. She is presently a sophomore studying English and Music at Skidmore College in great part due to her studies with Grace. My wife and I have trusted Grace from the very beginning of Renee’s musical journey. All through the pressure of preparing for recitals, the anxieties of auditions or just playing and finding new music for her own enjoyment, Grace has been a dependable and nurturing teacher. Grace is a very kind and patient instructor who has not only helped our daughter develop her piano skills, ear training and theory; but more specifically has given her the tools for effective practicing. Renee leaves her lessons with the confidence, diligence and self-discipline to approach her weekly practice routine. These skills have transferred to her other pursuits as well, namely literature and creative writing. In the event of any scheduling conflicts and/or unforeseen circumstances, Grace has always been understanding and flexible. The transition to virtual lessons during COVID without missing a beat for two years was remarkable. Our daughter has matured in so many ways over the years and we still remember her solid performances at recitals as well as her work on all the different styles, eras and composers that she has worked on with Grace. But beyond the tremendous growth of our daughter’s musicality and the development of her natural way of playing, was the witnessing of the warm relationship that formed between our daughter and Grace. Listening to the fun they had while working on very challenging pieces and the dependability of Grace for Renee to reach out at any time for the random virtual lesson on her college repertoire is beyond measure. We are so pleased that Renee’s studies have led her to a place where she can approach whatever she wants to do in life with the same tools acquired from studying piano with Grace. Finally, the experience was such an inspiration that I too found myself taking adult student piano lessons with Grace and found the same kindness and patience. So, after a couple of years of some very enjoyable lessons, and fitting in some practice between the cracks, I found myself performing a solo recital alongside the other 7–14-year-old students in front of a room full of their parents.
